Treatment Options:
  • Corticosteroid Injections:
Injections of corticosteroids like triamcinolone acetonide help reduce inflammation and flatten the keloid. Multiple injections may be needed, and they can be combined with other treatments like cryotherapy.
Cryotherapy:
This involves freezing the keloid with liquid nitrogen, which can help reduce its size and soften it.
Laser Therapy:
Different types of lasers, such as fractional CO2 lasers, can be used to target and break down the scar tissue, improving its appearance.
Surgical Excision:
In some cases, surgical removal of the keloid may be necessary, but there's a risk of recurrence, so it's often combined with other treatments like radiation therapy.
Radiation Therapy:
Radiation therapy can be used alone or after surgical removal to help prevent the keloid from recurring.
Silicone Sheets/Gel:
Applying silicone sheets or gel can help hydrate and soften the scar, leading to a flatter appearance.
Other Treatments:
Other options include topical imiquimod, intralesional injections of 5-fluorouracil or bleomycin, and botulinum toxin injections, but these are not as widely available or routinely used.
Important Considerations:
Keloids can continue to grow for weeks or even years after they first appear, but they eventually stop growing and won't disappear on their own.
Early treatment is often more effective than treating older, established keloids.
Some treatments, like corticosteroid injections, can cause side effects such as atrophy, telangiectasias, and hypopigmentation.
Prevention is key, so avoiding unnecessary skin trauma, especially in high-risk areas, can help reduce the risk of keloid formation
